The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to outperform older flagship phones in key areas.
Apple's new flagship is so hot right now. "Hot" as in – both literally and figuratively – "cool". Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
As most people know, high temperatures can negatively affect electronics, often causing devices to slow down or malfunction. This is especially true for smartphones, which are used constantly.
The iPhone 17 Pro handles heat much better than previous Apple models, making it a potentially good travel companion.
The improved heat management in the iPhone 17 Pro is due to a new internal component. The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max feature a vapor chamber, which is a first for Apple.
This hardware upgrade is significant, possibly even more so than the upgraded telephoto camera or updated design.
This advantage is notable. During a trip to Singapore in 2024, the author compared two phones: a Google Pixel 3a and a Xiaomi 13 Ultra.
The Xiaomi 13 Ultra was used solely for its camera capabilities, without a SIM card or active mobile services.
The older Pixel 3a was the primary device, used for navigation and internet access via SIM, eSIM, and Wi-Fi. However, the Pixel 3a struggled in the hot and humid climate, often overheating and slowing down, requiring the author to seek shade.
The Xiaomi 13 Ultra also heated up when recording 4K video for extended periods, but it did not experience any performance issues.
Ideally, a flagship smartphone should serve as an all-in-one solution, eliminating the need for multiple devices for navigation and photography. The iPhone 17 Pro aims to fulfill this need.
The iPhone 17 Pro features a new design with an aluminum back, which, combined with the vapor chamber, reduces heat-related issues.
The iPhone 17 Pro uses a redesigned cooling system to combat overheating. It replaces graphite sheets with a vapor chamber for better heat distribution and uses aluminum instead of titanium to prevent heat buildup. The design also minimizes glass on the back, with only a small panel for wireless charging, further improving thermal efficiency.
This is a positive development, even with criticisms of the iPhone 17's appearance and price.
While Android flagships have used vapor chambers for years, the iPhone 17 Pro's implementation is a welcome addition.
With summers potentially getting hotter, a phone equipped with a vapor chamber to manage heat is beneficial.
Smartphones with powerful processors, large batteries, bright screens, and extensive connectivity generate heat with every task. Effective heat management is essential.
