The Pixel Watch may soon gain the ability to provide health insights typically shared by doctors.

Google is recruiting volunteers for blood pressure detection research that could advance Pixel Watch health features.

As part of the study, some participants will be chosen at random to use a dedicated blood pressure monitor for a full day. Participants will be paid $50 for their time after returning the device.

For now, this feature is not yet available on the Pixel Watch. However, the study indicates that Google is actively developing it.

A significant advancement for wearables

This could be a major advancement if Google succeeds. Hypertension screening is uncommon on Wear OS. The Samsung Galaxy Watch is capable of measuring blood pressure, but it needs a separate device for the initial calibration, making it less convenient.

Apple has also entered the field with hypertension notifications in watchOS 26 for Apple Watch Series 9, 10, and 11. While it doesn’t provide exact readings, it can identify possible hypertension patterns over a month.

Therefore, a fully integrated system on the Pixel Watch could be distinctive, even with other developments.

Health monitoring could be the Pixel Watch's true purpose

Wearables have been around long enough that users now expect more from them. Aside from health tracking, smartwatches don’t offer much beyond what your phone can already accomplish. The wrist is also the ideal location for monitoring vital signs like blood pressure.

If Google succeeds in implementing this, the Pixel Watch might become one of the most helpful Wear OS devices available. It could be a real health tool on your wrist rather than just another smartwatch.
