The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, likely to be used in upcoming Android flagship phones, has been released.

The new processor debuts in the Xiaomi 17 series before hitting Galaxy S26 and other major Android flagships.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 places the user at the center of the mobile experience. According to Qualcomm, personalized AI agents can now process visual and audio input to assist users in real time. The Elite Gen 5 aims to advance mobile technology and personal AI capabilities.
Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager, mobile handset, Qualcomm Technologies, said this in September 2025.
The CPU features two prime cores operating at up to 4.6GHz and six performance cores up to 3.62GHz. Qualcomm states this configuration leads to a 35% improvement in CPU efficiency and a 16% increase in overall SoC efficiency. The new Adreno GPU also enhances gaming performance by up to 23% while reducing power consumption by 20%.
The Hexagon NPU's performance is improved by 37% while also reducing power usage compared to the previous generation. The Elite Gen 5 supports APV (Advanced Professional Video), a video codec that maintains quality while reducing file size that was introduced with Android 16. It is the first chip to fully support APV video capture.
Qualcomm also introduced Dragon Fusion, a new computational video system developed in collaboration with ArcSoft, which aims to produce video frames with the sharpness and detail of still photos, alongside improved colors, contrast, shadows, and highlights. This is made possible by the updated Spectra ISP, which now uses a 20-bit pipeline to allow four times the dynamic range.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will first be used in Xiaomi's 17 series, followed by models from Honor, Oppo, OnePlus, vivo, Sony, and Samsung's Galaxy S26 in the coming year.
Alongside the Elite Gen 5, Qualcomm has released a standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, offering manufacturers a choice between two tiers of flagship processors, similar to Apple's strategy with its A-series chips. The Elite version is the "Pro" model.
Qualcomm is competing with MediaTek, who recently announced the Dimensity 9500, their new high-end processor. The Dimensity 9500 exceeds 4GHz with its architecture. The real test will be in practical use and benchmarks, but the Snapdragon vs. Dimensity competition is expected to be close.
Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager, mobile handset, Qualcomm Technologies, said this in September 2025.
Qualcomm is focusing on AI and imaging with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Personalized AI agents and computational video are features that will define phone capabilities in the future.
Based on prior performance, the Elite Gen 5 is expected to perform well in real-world scenarios. The chip is expected to be used in upcoming Galaxy S26, OnePlus 15, and Xiaomi 17 devices in 2025–2026. Qualcomm appears to have created a strong contender for the flagship chip title.
