Threads is introducing group chats to compete further with X.

While a necessary addition, the new feature highlights how far Threads still has to go to truly compete.
Meta has announced the release of group chats on Threads, their text-based social media platform. This new feature enables users to create private conversations with up to 50 of their followers. Group chats can be given custom names, and Meta has stated that the ability to invite people via a link will be available soon.
This update is part of a wider effort to enhance the app's messaging capabilities. Direct messaging was reintroduced in July, two years after the platform's initial release. In addition to group chats, Threads is also extending its full messaging service to users within the European Union. This gives them the same access to individual and group chats, privacy options, and media support already available to others.
Why this matters
Threads is attempting to catch up to competitors like X (previously Twitter), which has supported group DMs for a long time and allows significantly more participants, up to 256 per chat. For Threads to be a true alternative, it needs these core features. The addition of group DMs is more of a necessary feature than an innovation, preventing users from needing to use other apps for group communication.
However, this feature will benefit the increasing number of users building communities on Threads. It can improve user retention on the platform, encouraging them to post publicly and form smaller, more private groups. This is a logical step in developing Threads into a more complete social network, rather than just an extension of Instagram.
Is it significant enough?
The addition of group chats is a good thing, but it is not revolutionary. It’s a standard feature that should have been implemented sooner. It indicates that Meta is committed to gradually developing Threads into a viable competitor to X, even if it still seems like they are working on fundamental aspects more than a year after its launch.
Would I use it? Possibly, if I had a group of friends actively using Threads. However, the 50-person limit feels somewhat restrictive compared to other platforms. Nevertheless, it is a required feature, showing that Meta is responsive and willing to invest in improving the platform's functionality. It's not a major upgrade, but it represents progress, which is valuable for a platform still trying to establish itself.
