Using a Galaxy Watch 8 with a non-Samsung phone may result in some feature limitations.

The Galaxy Watch 8 works with any contemporary Android phone, but it's limited. Limited how?
Many people consider buying a Galaxy Watch 8 Classic. The Galaxy Wearable app can be downloaded from the Play Store. But does the watch function the same way for users of non-Samsung phones?
Certain features have limited functionality for non-Samsung users.
Samsung has clarified these limitations in recent years. Samsung Health is accessible on all Android devices, providing various readings with some limitations. Samsung Health Monitor, a separate app exclusive to Samsung phones, unlocks advanced features.
Measuring blood pressure with a Galaxy Watch requires initial calibration with a cuff-based monitor. Blood Pressure measurements are restricted to the Galaxy ecosystem. Users can still manually input blood pressure data into Samsung Health.
Similarly, ECG functionality is limited to Samsung phones due to FDA approval requirements. FDA approval requires demonstrating device functionality, and Samsung can only control its own phones. Therefore, ECG measurements are only approved for Galaxy Watches paired with Samsung phones.
The same applies to IRHN, another FDA-approved feature, to ensure accuracy and control within the Samsung ecosystem. However, heart rate tracking remains available on any Android phone.
While basic sleep tracking is available on any Android phone, advanced Sleep Apnea detection is exclusive to Samsung phones. Snoring Detection is still accessible on all Android phones.
These three features are part of the Samsung Health Monitor app. The Samsung Health app is separate and offers core fitness and wellness features. It can be installed on contemporary Android phones, providing access to features.
A key feature of the Galaxy Watch 8 series is the Energy Score, a system analyzing activity, heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate during sleep, sleep patterns, and sleep quality. It offers an Energy Score with feedback.
This function works on Android phones (10 and above), regardless of the manufacturer. The watch may also use AI to suggest actions to improve the user's energy score.
The Galaxy Watch 8 can serve as a remote viewfinder, beneficial for vloggers or group photos. However, this is only functional when paired with a Galaxy phone.
Samsung Pay is also unavailable on a Galaxy Watch without a Samsung phone. Google Wallet is supported on the Galaxy Watch 8.
Users receive quick reply suggestions for messages. On Samsung phones, these replies are context-aware. Otherwise, there is a list of pre-made quick replies.
Modes and Routines automate functions, such as silencing the phone, activating dark mode, limiting apps, or disabling Always On Display. These can only be set up on a Galaxy phone and synced to the watch.
A Galaxy Watch can be configured as a kid's device. The LTE model is needed for calls and messages without a phone. Parents can also track the device's location.
However, this setup requires a Galaxy phone.
ECG, Sleep Apnea detection, and IHRN are major selling points. Not having access to them may feel like a loss.
The Galaxy Watch 8 series features a design, performance, and battery life. Users still have access to workout tracking, step counting, sleep tracking, Samsung Energy Score, and Sleep Score. Wear OS ensures compatibility with Play Store apps, fall detection, SOS request, and email and calendar sync.
Additional new features include Running Coach, Vascular Load, Antioxidant Index, Body Composition measurements, and AGEs Index.
The Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, and Galaxy Watch Ultra serve as Android smartwatches with additional features. Owning a Samsung phone unlocks more functionality. It remains a helpful device either way.
