Waze has updated its Android Auto integration to address a frustrating limitation.

The navigation app is finally letting you use your phone the way you want to.
Android Auto users of Waze have experienced some issues. For a long period, the app would freeze on a phone once the device was connected to a car. Users would often see a black screen or a notification to focus on the car's display, which prevented them from entering directions on their phones. Fortunately, this problem is being resolved.
According to a new report, a broad update is being distributed that lets users open and use the Waze app on their phones while it is also running on their car's screen. While this functionality has appeared in beta versions for several months, it now seems to be available to all users.
This enhancement was expected for some time. Google Maps, a related navigation app, eliminated this restriction in 2023. Prior to that change, Maps users encountered the same locked-screen issue, which was widely disliked.
This update is important because car infotainment systems are often slower than smartphones. Entering an address on a dashboard touchscreen can be awkward, slow, and distracting. Furthermore, many older cars still use rotary dials instead of touchscreens. Trying to type "Main Street" by scrolling through an alphabet using a dial is difficult.
This change creates a more level playing field. It enables a passenger to quickly use the phone to add a stop or view other routes without disrupting the driver's view of the map on the main display. It recognizes that a phone is often a superior input tool, even if a car offers a better viewing experience.
Personally, the writer is often caught between these navigation services. They usually prefer Google Maps for its simpler interface and better lane guidance, but Waze excels at providing real-time police and hazard alerts. However, the inability to quickly use their phone to change a destination on Waze was a significant drawback that often led them back to Maps.
This update addresses that issue. It makes Waze feel less limited and more modern. This improvement in usability might finally persuade the writer to use Waze for their daily commute. If the feature is not yet working, try force-stopping and reopening the app while connected; this should make the new prompt appear.
